180-foot stone “antenna” tomb in Western Sahara dated to 4,100–4,400 years ago

Archaeologists have excavated and dated one of the Sahara’s stone antenna tombs for the first time in the Atlantic Sahara. The 54.5-metre monument in northern Western Sahara held a young adult buried with four ostrich eggshell beads. Two radiocarbon dates anchor a monument type that is common across the Sahara but had never been dated there. The study was published October 20 in *African Archaeological Review*. New fossil confirms Homo erectus appeared 200,000 years earlier than expected

A new adult fossil, DNH 127, from Drimolen Main Quarry near Johannesburg confirms *Homo erectus* was in southern Africa 2 million years ago. The earlier claim rested on a child’s skull fragment, DNH 134, which made adult comparison difficult; the new analysis of 18 fossils, published in the *Annals of Human Biology*, firms up the date. Music at Troy · Archaeology

Troy’s first musical instrument found alongside a 4,500-year-old idol head

Excavations at Troy in northwestern Türkiye uncovered a 2,800-year-old bone flute and a 4,500-year-old anthropomorphic idol head. Türkiye’s culture ministry calls the flute the first and only musical artifact identified in more than 150 years of digging at the site — direct evidence for music at a place better known for walls and war. Brent tops $111 as Middle East strikes lift oil and pressure gold and silver

Oil jumped on reports of renewed U.S.–Israel planning on Iran and Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia. Gold and silver fell as the higher oil price fed fears the Fed will stay tight longer, and Asian stocks slid — Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong down around 3%, with China’s CSI 300 entering bear-market territory, down 20% from its June peak. Wall Street closed higher Wednesday, but futures fell Thursday morning

Wednesday’s close was solid — S&P 500 +0.58% to 7,757, Nasdaq +1.05% to 26,703, Dow +0.69% to 52,856 — before the oil shock hit futures. Thursday premarket, S&P futures were down about 1% and Nasdaq 100 futures almost 2%. The next Fed decision is October 28, with no change expected at that meeting and a possible December hike being priced in. Planet Labs deploys Pelican-12 to test AI processing in orbit

Planet Labs launched its Pelican-12 Earth-observation satellite aboard SpaceX’s Bandwagon-5 rideshare on October 20 from Cape Canaveral. The spacecraft carries an NVIDIA Jetson module for autonomous on-orbit AI inferencing — identifying objects and processing data before transmission to Earth, rather than sending everything raw.
