Xujiayao fossils identified as Denisovan — and the paper argues most East Asian archaic Homo were too

A *Nature* paper published October 21 sampled two of the 20 Xujiayao fossils from northern China, recovered 18 endogenous ancient proteins, and concluded the assemblage belongs to a late Middle Pleistocene Denisovan population. The team then argues Dali, Jinniushan and Hualongdong are Denisovan as well, and that the size gap behind the proposed *Homo juluensis* is variation within one population. It is a sweeping reclassification resting on a small molecular sample — worth reading with that caveat in mind. Lost Roman fort in Wales may match the camp of Magnus Maximus in the Mabinogion

Archaeologists report a timber fort likely established during Governor Sextus Julius Frontinus’s campaign of AD 74–78, with finds including an iron stylus, a lead spindle-whorl, a woodworking axe, a gaming counter and third- and fourth-century coins. The site sits beside a major Roman road and, the researcher argues, matches the camp of Magnus Maximus named in the medieval Welsh *Mabinogion* — a case where folklore appears underpinned by fact. First Late Bronze Age fortifications found at ancient Palaepaphos in Cyprus

Excavations at Marchello in Kouklia, less than a kilometre from the Sanctuary of Aphrodite, found the earliest phase of Palaepaphos’s rampart dates to Late Cypriot IIC–IIIA, at the end of the Late Bronze Age. The main find of the 2026 season, by a University of Athens team, is a rectangular bastion later extended into an almost square tower about 7.4 by 7.3 metres, with an undisturbed pottery deposit and marl laid over the stone foundations to level the mudbrick above. Tech selloff drives Wall Street down Thursday; oil holds above $100 on Saudi attacks

Thursday closed sharply split: the S&P 500 lost 1.21% and the Nasdaq 2.60% — its worst day since June — as concern over AI funding needs hit chips, while the Dow finished just above flat. Overnight the tech retreat eased, but oil did not: Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia kept supply fears live. Friday premarket, S&P futures were down about 0.2–0.3% and Dow futures about 0.6%. Fed expected to hold at 3.75%–4.00% on October 28, with inflation re-accelerating

KPMG’s October 22 primer expects the FOMC to hold next week after September’s quarter-point hike, with another increase likely in December — most September participants expected one more move by year-end. Meanwhile the Cleveland Fed’s Inflation Nowcasting tool puts October CPI at 3.77%, up from September’s 3.7%, and core PCE edging up to 3.13% in October after three months at 3.0%, with fuel costs — gasoline up 34.2% and fuel oil up 74.0% over the year to September — leading the headline. No BLS release and no Fed speech are scheduled today; flash PMIs and Michigan sentiment are the day’s data. Claude formally verifies 123 open-source libraries — and finds old vulnerabilities on the way

Anthropic’s Frontier Red Team, working with Theorem, reports Claude generated formal proofs of safety properties for 239 entry points across 123 OSS-Fuzz libraries at the RISC-V assembly level — about 180 million lines of Rocq checked by the Rocq kernel — and uncovered previously undetected, years-old vulnerabilities during the work. Separately on October 22, Anthropic donated its Agent Skills open standard to the Linux Foundation’s Agentic AI Foundation, transferring the name and agentskills.io domain.
